Blocked Drain? Safe Checks and Who to Contact

ELITE DRAIN & FLOW · HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Blocked drain? Start with these safe checks.

A few details can help you work out who to contact and explain the problem clearly. This is an observation checklist, not a repair guide.

1. Note what is affected

  • Is it one sink, toilet or drain—or several fixtures?
  • When did it begin, and is it constant or intermittent?
  • Is water backing up, draining slowly, or overflowing?
  • Have nearby homes reported a similar issue? Ask only if convenient.

2. Check who may be responsible

Responsibility can depend on where the pipe is and whether it serves one property or several. If the problem may involve a shared or public sewer, contact your sewerage company or use GOV.UK’s blocked-drain guidance to find the right route. If you rent, tell your landlord or managing agent.

3. Keep the situation safe

  • Do not lift a heavy drain cover or enter a chamber.
  • Keep people and pets away from wastewater or an overflowing drain.
  • If sewage is entering the property or the situation is urgent, contact your sewerage company and seek qualified help.
  • Take a photo from a safe distance if it helps explain what you can see.
